Brother John and the Jazz Apostles

This evening coffeehouse features the jazz band from New Hope Lutheran Church in Columbia, MD. Members of the group are trumpet player John Madden (aka “Brother John,” the group’s founder), who also plays with community band Category 5; pianist Ken “Fingers” Cain, who also sings, plays the organ and bass, and is a member of New Hope’s World Music Band; drummer Marla “Thumper” Stahl, who also sings, and learned to play the flute at age 44 and the drums at the “tender age” of 50; and bass player Karl “Samurai Bassman” Heikkinen, former double bass major at the Peabody Institute of Music at Johns Hopkins University, whose experience both as a freelance musician and with the US Air Force Band enabled him to perform at venues like Kennedy Center and at the White House for all US presidents since 1979.
